New Babylon is an anti-capitalist city perceived and designed in 1959-74 as a future potentiality by visual artist Constant Nieuwenhuys. [1] Origin of the name Initially known as Dériville (from "ville dérivée", literally, "drift city"), [2] it was later renamed New Babylon.

In 1956 Constant began to work on New Babylon ,1 a visionary architectural proposal for a future society. Aker World War II, when throughout Europe cities damaged during the war were being rebuilt, Constant turned to developing a series of prototypes for a utopian city. Abandoning painting, he focused on developing a situationist city.
